Difference between Splintering and Chipping

Splintering

Definition: To come apart into long sharp fragments.

Chipping

Part of speech: verb

Definition: To chop or cut into small pieces.

Part of speech: noun

Definition: A fragment broken off of a larger materialThe act of breaking something into small fragments, or of removing fragments from pottery etc.

Example sentence: Some of the most brilliant things that someone might do could happen in three minutes because it's something that just occurs to them. And then, there's the example of really chipping away at something to create something great. I don't believe that one is more reliable than the other.
